The Publishing Game

Jake A. Strife on September 9, 2016

Hi everyone,

As I announced back in August, I finally published Omega Virus: Beta Hour (book 1). I used Createspace for the paperback and Kindle Direct Publishing for the ebook. It’s been just over a month, and quite honestly, sales have been dismal. I’ve sold SOME copies, but most of the royalties are coming in from those of you who read through Kindle Unlimited. Hey, it’s something. Not what I hoped for, but something nonetheless. What makes me sad, is that only 10% of Omega Virus: Beta Hour can remain published on Wattpad. That equals three chapters and the prologue. Many people have voted for those first three chapters but haven’t gone on to purchase the book. Omega Virus: Gamma Hour (book 2), picked up a lot of votes and reads recently and even made it to #24 in the Horror rankings. I wonder if people skipped book one and went straight to book two. Well, more on that later.

At the very end of August, I published Dark Dayz: VR Dawn (book 1), my trapped in VR Horror novel. (IMO the best book I’ve written yet). The same deal, paperback and Kindle ebook. This book has sold even less, but then again it has only been a little over a week. Yesterday and today I offered the free promotion of a FREE Kindle download. I reached about 30 downloads for free, while Omega Virus: Beta Hour had 91 free downloads. And only two people left reviews on Omega and one on Dark Dayz. Hopefully, that’ll change soon. After my current, I’ll begin writing Dark Dayz: Shaded Noon (book 2).

So hopefully I’ll pick up traction.

The third book I plan on publishing (and the cover is already completed thanks to my wonderful wife), is

Strange World: Grimoire (book1). This book was my least popular on Wattpad, but at the same time it obtained more votes per reader than any other book, so maybe it wasn’t the least popular after all. Either way, I just finished writing and posting Strange World: Mega-Real (book 2) on Wattpad. As with Omega and Dark Dayz, I’ll offer two free days of Strange World, and we’ll see what kind of hype I can pick up from that. Strange World is a different kind of story… more lighthearted, despite the dark issue at hand. Omega ended up more along the lines of crazy action, while Dark Dayz caught the horror element well. Strange World 2 won’t be up on Wattpad for very long, as it’s in my current pipeline to publish, not too far from now.

My current project and fourth book I’ll publish will be Omega Virus: Gamma Hour (book 2). I’m currently ten chapters deep into a heavy edit. I’m fixing plot holes, rewording sentences, and catching ever darn typo I can. The original word count for book 2 was 110,000! The longest since the original Severed Chains which hit 150,000. BOTH of which are far too long. My goal for the edit of Omega Virus 2 is 90,000 words, and I’m well on my way to reaching it. So that’ll be my fourth book published.

As for the project after that, I’ll be writing Dark Dayz: Shaded Noon (book 2), then editing my life away for the next few projects. Eventually, Severed Chains and GodForge will be thrown into the mix, but that’s somewhere down the line.

The best news is that I reached my New Years Resolution of wanting to write at least FOUR books this year. I can still potentially reach SIX as I hoped, but with all the editing I have to do, that may not happen, which is fine. I’ve written a total of 15 books as of Strange World 2, and I’m proud of it.

My biggest concern is building up my fanbase. Some people use Reddit, so I’ve heard. But I don’t have time for writing prompts, and I don’t understand Reddit fully. I feel like an old man sticking a floppy disk into a PS4 thinking they are compatible.

ANYway, so that’s all that’s going on with my writing life.

Go pick up your copies of Omega Virus: Beta Hour and Dark Dayz: VR Dawn, and look for Strange World: Grimoire (coming soon). AND leave reviews, please. You can also continue to follow me on Wattpad (JakeAshStrife) for the new books I post.
