We all have them.
Be it with a person, place, or thing.
The kind I’m speaking of has to do with stories. It can exist in any media; books, comics, movies, music, or tv shows.
One thing remains the common denominator; if you have a love/hate relationship with a character or particular bit of story, that means the writer is doing something right. Do you LOVE to HATE that villain? Do you LOVE to HATE that event?
Yes? Then awesome!
Most recently, on the small screen, I’ve found myself love/hating Negan from the Walking Dead… mostly hating, but I digress.
If you’re a fan or even have a friend who’s a fan, you know by now what Negan did with his barbed wire baseball bat, Lucille. If not, I won’t spoil it for you, but please, do catch up (others won’t be so kind).
Let’s examine why Negan is such a likable, yet hatable character.
Lovable: He’s charismatic, he brings a new level of danger to the game, he has an unusual weapon, he’s utterly terrifying with said weapon, and he has control over a large group of individuals. (I’m sure you can add more, but let’s go w/these.)
Hateable: He’s clearly evil, he has a weapon that he used to kill (***********), he threatens our level of comfort w/our favorite characters’ ability to survive, he is easily king of the jerks on the show (that’s a huge understatement), he terrifies us, and we fear someone like that ever existing should the Zombie Apocalypse truly occur.
That’s my list for why I love/hate Negan. Honestly, I hope he gets a TIGER to the FACE. Not a bullet, not a sword, not even his own baseball bat, Lucille… I want him to get a mother effing tiger to the mother effing face.
Of course, there are villains both in stories and the real world that we just can’t love to hate. We just hate. Period. Sadly we can do nothing about these. And sadly, that also means the author has some work to do.
As a writer, I try my best to create villains you will love/hate. I also try to make each villain as different as I can. Some are the typical monologue villains; others will surprise you. And some, I hope you’ll never see coming. If I fail at this, I apologize and will try harder in the future.
Do you love/hate my villains?
What about love/hate villains in other stories? Negan? President Snow? Voldemort? Albert Wesker? Lex Luthor?
Let me know. I’d love to hear about them.
That wraps up this topic, so I’ll give you a quick update on my writing plans in the near future.
As you know, I’ve completed 15 books in my lifetime. Currently, only Omega Virus: Beta Hour (book 1) and Dark Dayz: VR Dawn (book 1) are for sale on Amazon.
Sales: I HOPE to have Strange World: Grimoire (book 1), for sale on Amazon by Xmas (2016). And then following that will be Omega Virus: Gamma Hour (book 2). As for the tertiary book on that list, I’m unsure at the moment.
Wattpad: I’m working on Dark Dayz: Shaded Noon (book 2) and I’m four chapters deep. After that, if all goes well, I’ll be editing that unnamed tertiary book on the to sell list, and at the same time, I’ll be working on the following novel to put on Wattpad.
I would like it to be GodForge: Forge of the Body (book 2). A lot of fans have asked for the sequel, and I’ve been putting it off with all this other work. SO here’s my to-do list in the order I’d like, but may not happen that way.
1. COMPLETE: Dark Dayz 2: Shaded Noon
2. EDIT: GodForge 1: Forge of the Mind
3. WRITE: GodForge 2: Forge of the Body
4. EDIT: Strange World 2: Mega-Real
5. WRITE: Strange World 3: Ether
6. EDIT: Omega Virus 3: Delta Hour
7. WRITE: Omega Virus 6: Omega Hour
8. EDIT: Dark Dayz 2: Shaded Noon
9. WRITE: Dark Dayz 3: Veiled Dusk
10. EDIT: Severed Chains 1: Fateless
(And chapters of Earthbound & Final Fantasy peppered in amongst these).
I’ve dug myself a hole with having so many series going at once, but alas, what’s done is done.
So stayed tuned for future books in all my series:
And plenty more to come!
